Using Child Safety Seats

Back to Health and Safety Menu

When to use a forward-facing seat:  if a child is at least 20 pounds and at least one year old to about 40 pounds and about age four.  The harness straps should be at or above shoulder level.  Most convertible, forward-facing seats require use of the top slot for forward-facing seats.

NotableMost parents don't realize the importance of changing child safety seats as their children grow.  There are four steps to keeping kids safe in a vehicle: rear-facing child safety seats; forward-facing safety seats; belt-positioning booster seats; and seat belts only when children reach the safe height and weight to fit in them correctly.
